Join the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for an exploration of British music. Warlock, Davies, and Britten. This concert brings together works that highlight the innovation, wit, and depth of English composers across the 20th century.
The program opens with Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite, a lively collection of Renaissance-inspired dances. Warlock’s suite breathes new life into historical melodies, offering a fresh take on early music with modern twists that blend tradition with a playful spirit.
Next, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise takes listeners on a journey to the Scottish isles. This imaginative piece vividly depicts the progression of a wedding celebration, culminating in the awe-inspiring arrival of a sunrise represented by the majestic sound of bagpipes. Davies’ music is both atmospheric and narrative, celebrating the rich cultural life of Scotland’s Orkney Islands.
The program concludes with Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from his opera Peter Grimes. Each movement captures a different mood of the sea, reflecting Britten’s deep connection to the English coastline. From the serene calm of “Dawn” to the fierce storm of “Storm,” Britten’s interludes showcase his gift for orchestral color and evoke the powerful beauty of the natural world.
Experience the unique voices of these British composers as the ASO brings their stories and landscapes to life in an evening that promises to be both lively and evocative.
