Harmony and Heritage Community Garden Days
July 15, 2024 @ 8:00 am - July 23, 2024 @ 1:00 pm
Arlington Historic House and Gardens is pleased to announce the establishment of a new garden dedicated to providing resources to the West End community as a part of its new Harmony & Heritage programming series. This series celebrates African-American history by acknowledging past and present traumas, honoring our ancestral legacy, and forging pathways for health and healing. The garden will be dedicated as a healthy community resource that offers a unique opportunity for individuals and groups to reinvest in and give back to the community.
Community Garden Days will take place from July 15th to July 23rd with volunteer sessions available from 8:00am-10am and 11am-1:00pm.
Community gardens play a crucial role in areas that are designated as food deserts, meaning they lack viable options for healthy food in neighborhoods where access to grocery stores with fresh produce is limited. By participating in the “Harmony and Heritage Community Garden Days,” volunteers can help maintain and expand this vital resource, ensuring that everyone in our community has access to free, healthy food options.
Harmony & Heritage Community Garden Days are not only opportunities to establish this resource for the community, but they also provide opportunities to cultivate restoration, as soil has symbolic and therapeutic aspects, offering a sense of grounding and healing. As we dig into the earth, we connect with the cycles of nature and the legacy of those who have cultivated the land before us.
We encourage community members, families, schools, and local organizations to come out in large numbers to invest. Your participation will make a significant impact on the success of our community garden and the many programs it supports. The garden is not only a place of growth and nourishment but also a place of healing and connection.
For more information and to schedule a time to volunteer, please contact Devin Hudson. Together, we can cultivate a healthier, more vibrant community.
