November 7, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

The Making of a Black American Modernist

From the streets of New Orleans to the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hayward Oubre distinguished himself through innovative sculpture and painting. At this talk, hear from the friends and students who knew him personally to learn how this master of American modernism came to be, and the lasting impact he created at HBCUs in the South.

Art historian and artist Amalia Amaki, librarian and scholar Carter Cue, and artist Noah Jemisin will discuss their connections to Oubre, while exhibition catalogue designer David Jon Walker will discuss the process of connecting their words to Oubre’s works of art. This panel will be moderated by exhibition curator Katelyn D. Crawford.

The catalogue will be available for purchase at the event.
