Raise your hand if you love sitting in traffic. Anyone? Bueller? For those of us who prefer not seeing a sea of brake lights, here’s some good news—the City of Birmingham has partnered with software company Causeway Technologies to introduce new, efficient ways to send road closure updates to the public in real time.

In its latest effort to modernize traffic operations, the City of Birmingham has partnered with Causeway Technologies to improve how the city plans, manages and communicates road closures through new, state-of-the-art digital tools.

“Birmingham is committed to finding smarter, more effective ways to serve our residents. This partnership puts technology to work for our city, helping us improve traffic coordination, strengthen public safety, and make it easier for people to navigate Birmingham.”

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin

Until now, the city has relied on disconnected, traditional processes to communicate road closure updates. Using Causeway Technologies’ Traffic Management and Live Link solutions, city teams can use a centralized digital platform to coordinate closures and update road conditions in real time. Field personnel can even activate or clear closures directly from their phone!

From there, updates are automatically shared with major navigation providers to give motorists the timely, accurate routing information they need to plan their route. Don’t worry, you don’t need a new app; closures will show up automatically in Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze.

“This technology strengthens our ability to coordinate road closures, respond to real-time conditions and provide motorists with more accurate information. It’s another step toward delivering safer, more efficient transportation services across Birmingham.”

Kelvin Blevins, Director of Transportation for the Birmingham Department of Transportation

Beyond road closures, Birmingham plans to utilize the platform to manage construction projects, infrastructure improvements and other roadway disruptions. What’s more, Birmingham is the first municipality in Alabama to adopt the platform.

“Birmingham is demonstrating forward-thinking leadership by embracing digital solutions to manage its transportation network. We’re excited to partner with the city and support its vision for smarter, more connected transportation operations.”

Abigail Drescher, Customer Success Manager for Causeway Technologies
