If you love following the latest food trends, you’ll want to add Niki’s West in Birmingham to your list. The iconic meat-and-three was just named the Alabama restaurant with the biggest cult following by The Takeout.

The twist? Birmingham has been in on this “trend” for nearly 80 years.

The Takeout recently rounded up the restaurants with the biggest cult followings in every state, and Niki’s West earned Alabama’s top spot.

Surprised? Neither are we. It’s one of Birmingham’s most beloved and storied meat-and-three restaurants with a Greek-inspired spin on home-cooked Southern classics, relaxed atmosphere and fast, cafeteria-style service — all things that keep Magic City locals and visitors coming back.

If you’re a first-timer, there are a few things to know before you visit Niki’s West.

The Takeout turned to Reddit for advice, noting: “There’s a protocol here — advice for first-timers on Reddit includes knowing what to order before you get in line, the order-ticket-pay process, and offers to go along for the inaugural meal. Lines can stretch out the door, so the staff can get a little testy. But it must be worth it, as this place is consistently busy.”

Testy? Most like tasty.

Why Birmingham loves Niki’s West

Niki’s West opened in 1957 as the second restaurant under the Niki’s name in Birmingham. Greek immigrant Gus Hontzas and his uncle John Juntas opened the original Niki’s Downtown on 2nd Avenue in 1951.

Though the original location closed in 2019, Niki’s West continues serving up Southern comfort on Finley Avenue.
