One of the most highly-anticipated projects on the north side of town is gearing up to complete a major milestone. CR Endeavors, the developer behind The Star Uptown—an innovative mixed-use redevelopment of the 52-acre former Carraway Hospital hospital campus—is aiming to complete the demolition of the former hospital by the end of the year.

Last week, I attended the “Weird Al” Yankovic show at the Coca-Cola Amphitheater. Somewhere in the middle of Amish Paradise, my eyes wandered north towards the still-standing, partially demolished section of Carraway Hospital, which got me wondering: wasn’t the hospital supposed to be demolished last year?

The answer is yes—or at least, that was the plan. In December of 2025, CR Endeavors CEO Robert Simon joined local officials and neighborhood leaders to announce that construction on The Star Uptown would commence as soon as demolition of the former hospital site was completed. Yet, that pesky section of the hospital building is still standing nearly a year later.

So, what’s the holdup?

According to a statement from CR-Endeavors, the demolition was delayed in order to avoid damaging an adjoining parking deck that is owned and operated by the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC). Since the two structures share a foundation, CR-Endeavors needed to complete “considerable underground shoring work” to avoid inadvertently adding the parking deck to the list of demolished buildings.

Here’s the good news. The demolition of the Carraway hospital building is expected to be complete by the end of this year, clearing the way for CR Endeavors to move forward with the really good news: The Star Uptown development.

Announced in 2021, The Star Uptown is a forthcoming mixed-use development of the 52-acre former hospital campus in Birmingham’s Norwood neighbhorhood. Named after the iconic Carraway star (which will be preserved and incorporated into the new development), The Star Uptown will include:

  • Single family cottages and multi-family housing units
  • Experiential retail, restaurants and healthcare services

The development will be anchored by the aforementioned Coca-Cola Amphitheater, a 9,300-capacity outdoor music venue owned by the BJCC and managed/operated by Live Nation.
