Arc of Central Alabama’s new facility among new $1M+ building permits

Arc of Central Alabama will expand its operations to a new facility in Birmingham. (IronVest)

This past week, 11 new building permits were issued across the state for construction projects exceeding $1 million. These permits included multiple projects in Prattville, Guntersville, Athens and Huntsville—as well as projects in Birmingham and Decatur.

The Birmingham project is for a longtime non-profit’s new headquarters.

Community Works Inc.—an affiliate of The Arc of Central Alabama—purchased an office building at 500 Beacon Parkway West in Birmingham for $1.56 million earlier this year, which will become a new office and programming hub for The Arc of Central Alabama

The building permit, for just over $1 million, will cover renovation and upgrades to the building, such as:

  • Accessibility upgrades like ADA-complaint restrooms, entrances and common areas
  • Tearing down and rebuilding interior walls to transition traditional corporate offices into open classrooms, multi-purpose community rooms and administrative space
  • Updating electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems

Watsonbruhn Builders is the lead contractor on this project.
