The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex board approved a five-year extension of its naming rights agreement with Legacy Credit Union this week, keeping the state’s largest arena under the Legacy Arena name through the next half-decade. Legacy Credit Union first became the arena’s namesake in 2015.
The renewal comes during a milestone year for the venue, which opened in 1976 as the BJCC Coliseum and has spent five decades evolving into one of the Southeast’s top touring stops.
“We love playing a role in bringing people together, strengthening Birmingham’s economy, and creating lasting memories for our community.”

Legacy Arena celebrated its 50th anniversary July 11 with a free community festival and concert featuring The Black Jacket Symphony performing songs from artists who’ve played the venue over the years. The event included food, games and giveaways for the community.
Over five decades, the arena has hosted legendary concerts, championship sporting events, family shows and community celebrations, along with a 2020 modernization that closed the venue for a $125 million renovation.
Legacy Arena reopened in 2021 with:
- New seating
- Expanded restrooms
- A 360-degree LED ribbon board
- Upgraded acoustics and lighting
- New concession options
- Escalators
- An open concourse with city views
BJCC Executive Director and CEO Tad Snider said the Legacy Credit Union partnership has played a role in the arena’s legacy.
“Under the Legacy name, our arena has hosted countless events that have created memorable experiences for fans while benefiting our community. Legacy Credit Union’s continued support plays an important role in that success.”
