Birmingham’s airport is getting a major runway upgrade — and the price tag is $19 million.

A previous pavement analysis found that a section of the runway falls below the 20-year design criteria based on the current aircraft mix at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), according to the Birmingham Airport Authority (BAA). While not considered unsafe for air traffic at this time, the current condition can be improved in a way that will ensure reliable and safe use well into the future.

“Given the increased use of the runway, particularly with heavier cargo operations, this is the right time to proceed with the reconstruction.”

Marcelo Lima, Vice-President of Planning and Development for BAA

In 2025, BHM logged 41,398 total aircraft operations across commercial, general, corporate aviation, and military categories.

Birmingham Airport runway likely to close 2 days

The improvements will include the replacement of pavement that will be installed 3 feet deep.

The main runway is expected to remain open during construction, though it may close for two days at some point during the project.

Birmingham-based Dunn Construction won the contract.
