A quarter of a century after the September 11 attacks changed the world forever, one remarkable true story serves as a reminder that even amidst unimaginable tragedy, kindness and humanity finds a way of shining through.

From August 21 through September 20, 2026, Birmingham’s Red Mountain Theatre is bringing that story to life with its production of “Come From Away,” a Tony Award-winning musical based on the small Canadian town that selflessly welcomed nearly 7,000 airline passengers diverted from their original destinations.

After U.S. airspace closed on September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were unexpectedly diverted to Gander, a small, sleepy town in Newfoundland, Canada. In the following days, the local community came together to welcome complete strangers—the “Plane People”—with open homes, hot meals and generosity that’d rival the best Southern hospitality.

Birmingham’s thespian community takes center stage

As befits a story about community, one of the most exciting parts of Red Mountain Theatre’s production of “Come From Away” is that the cast is made up almost entirely of Alabama performers—many of whom have shared stages together across Birmingham for years.

“I feel like it made us comfortable in the room immediately. That made it easy to jump straight into the technical details that this show calls for. We’re all playing multiple characters, the entire show, without a break, so being comfortable with each other off the bat really helped.”

Campbell is joined onstage by many names that will be familiar to regular theatregoers in the Magic City, including:

During the performance, Jacinda, DaWoyne, Kristen and the rest of the cast bring dozens of real-life people to stage, using new accents, postures or props to represent different characters.

“Behind the story, we have this heavy, horrific, traumatic moment in history, where so many lives were changed in an instant. But the writers brought in so much breadth and life to this score and script, and that’s what makes it amazing. Bob’s character [portrayed by DaWoyne] is one of those moments where you get to breathe and laugh, and remember that there were really amazing, beautiful things going on at the same time.”

For many cast members, the rehearsals have brought back firsthand memories of where they were on September 11.

“Well, for me, I remember I was in ninth grade, at Shades Valley. I just remember the silence in the halls and walking from class to class. We didn’t work at all that day, just watched it all play out moment by moment. So that is my character’s response in the play when they finally understand what happened for the first time: silence.”
