New $1M+ building permits include Walmart distribution center in Cullman

This past week saw 17 new building permits issued across the state for construction projects exceeding $1 million. These permits include projects in Birmingham, Huntsville, Prattville and Madison, among other Alabama cities.

The priciest of these permits is for the continued renovation to Walmart’s distribution center in Cullman.

The $29.5 million building permit for the distribution center is part of Walmart’s $350 million revamping project for the center.

Key upgrades include:

  • Implementing smart robotics to handle physically demanding, repetitive sorting and lifting tasks
  • Installing artificial intelligence-powered inventory and case-tracking software to streamline logistics
  • Transitioning traditional manual labor roles into tech-focused positions trained in robotics maintenance and digital tracking
