Reading time: 3 minutes

A historic hotel in downtown Birmingham is about to enter a new chapter.
After more than a year of renovations, the Tutwiler Hotel has begun teasing its reopening as The Tutwiler Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton.
About the Tutwiler Hotel

Located at the corner of Park Place and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd N at 2021 Park Place, the Tutwiler Hotel has been a downtown Birmingham landmark for more than a century—but it wasn’t always called the Tutwiler.
Constucted in 1913 as the Ridgely Apartments, the nine-story building was renovated in the mid-1980s as the “new” Tutwiler Hotel, named in honor of Birmingham’s original Tutwiler Hotel. Built in 1914 and named for Edward M. Tutwiler, the original Tutwiler Hotel was demolished in 1974 to make way for The Plaza Birmingham, which now serves as the headquarters for Viva Health.
Following a $9 million renovation of the entire hotel, the Tutwiler Hotel opened as the Hampton Inn & Suites Birmingham-Downtown-Tutwiler in 2007. After acquiring the Tutwiler Hotel in 2023, the A&R Development Company of Baldwin County announced plans for a $7 million renovation, consisting of new furniture, fixtures, bathtubs, paint, wallpaper and more.
The Tutwiler Hotel is reopening soon as a DoubleTree by Hilton

After operating for years as the Hampton Inn & Suites Birmingham-Downtown Tutwiler, the historic historic is preparing to welcome guests under a different Hilton brand: The Tutwiler Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton.
The hotel’s social media accounts recently unveiled the new DoubleTree branding, teasing an upcoming grand reopening celebration. While an official reopening date has not yet been announced, Hilton’s website now lists the property as “Opening Soon” and notes that reservations are not yet available.
While both the Hampton Inn & Suites and DoubleTree by Hilton brands belong to the broader Hilton portfolio, DoubleTree by Hilton is a premium, full-service brand that offers more upscale accommodations, expanded dining options, meeting and event spaces and additional guest amenities than the Hampton brand.
Once open, the new Tutwiler Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton will feature 149 guest rooms, 6 meeting rooms and amenities like:
- Free WiFi
- Digital room keys
- Non-smoking rooms
- Streaming entertainment
- Cribs
- A fitness center
