Surin West, the popular Thai restaurant within the Birmingham Five Points South Entertainment District, remains open after a vehicle crashed into the front of the restaurant early Sunday morning after Independence Day.

A manager told us it happened around 4 in the morning — police are still looking into it. No one was hurt during the incident.

Despite breaking a large window into the building causing a gaping hole, the beloved Thai restaurant did not miss a beat, quickly boarding up the space.

Surin West remains open after crash

Even after the early-morning crash, Surin West was open Sunday evening.

Located at 1918 11th Avenue South, Surin West is one of the first Thai restaurants in Alabama, opening its doors 30 years ago in March 1996.

Known for its coconut soup, Thai delicacies, sushi and cocktails, the spacious restaurant is a favorite for Birmingham residents seeking to impress guests or looking for a night out with family and friends.

Surin West finished a major renovation at the Five Points South restaurant site in 2017.

Fun fact. The early 1920s building was once a theater.

They are open daily for lunch between 11:00AM to 2:30PM and dinner begins at 5:00PM and closes at 8:30PM. On Friday and Saturday they close at 9:30PM.
