A new scenic access road to Rickwood Caverns State Park opened this week off Interstate 65 in Blount County.

Local and state community leaders held a ribbon-cutting Monday, June 8, unveiling the new road and playground.

“Rickwood Caverns State Park sits so close to the interstate, but visitors have for too long needed to take winding roads to access the park’s beauty. The new access road opens the door to more exploration, more family memories and more opportunities to experience Alabama’s breathtaking natural beauty.”

The new road was built thanks to a partnership between the Blount County Commission and Alabama State Parks. The road connects to Poplar Road near Exit 287, just off the entrance ramp to I-65 South. It contains the following features:

  • Bike lanes
  • Wider lanes to allow for convenient park access for RV owners

In addition to the access road, the 380-acre Rickwood Caverns replaced one of the oldest playgrounds in the State Parks System with a new state-of-the-art, accessible playground.

Funding for the new amenity was made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham through the Alabama State Parks Foundation.
