Drivers on Interstate 59/20 in western Jefferson County are experiencing a smoother commute thanks to ongoing roadwork.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is entering the final stages of a two-mile resurfacing project between Fairfield Boulevard and Valley Road.

Crews began work on the heavily trafficked corridor in February. While the newly finished riding surface is open to traffic, motorists can expect brief disruptions as crews complete the final permanent striping work.

Current roadwork sets the stage for 2027 widening project

This maintenance work serves as the foundation for a much larger infrastructure change.

ALDOT plans to widen this specific two-mile stretch of I-59/20 to accommodate higher traffic volumes.

The project timeline and public involvement details include:

  • Public comment period: Open now through June 26, community members can submit feedback and ask questions regarding the proposed expansion via the ALDOT website.
  • Contract bidding: The project is scheduled to be awarded to a contractor by Fall 2027.
  • Construction timeline: Once active, the widening project is projected to take two years to complete.
