Nearly a year after Matt Rife headlined the opening of the Coca-Cola Amphitheater on June 22, the 9,300-seat outdoor amphitheater is getting a big upgrade. This past weekend, the Coca-Cola Amphitheater unveiled a new sensory-inclusive space complete with resources designed to help guests regulate and decompress during events, including:
- Calming visuals
- Adjustable lighting
- Comfortable seating
- Noise-canceling headphones
- Weighted lap pads
- Fidget tools

The new room is named to honor Don Lupo, a longtime Birmingham community leader and the director of the Birmingham Mayor’s Office of Citizens Assistance.
“Twenty-five years ago, I met a nine-year-old girl that had been diagnosed with Autism; today, she is 34 and living a wonderful life because of those around her. She teaches those who come in contact with her throughout her life that an invisible disability isn’t a showstopper; for her, it’s an opportunity.
KultureCity deals in opportunity, making the ‘nevers’ possible for so many individuals with invisible disabilities. I will forever be grateful for my young friend who has taught me about acceptance, and for KultureCity, which gives me the opportunity to practice that acceptance.”

The Don Lupo Sensory Room is part of Coca-Cola Amphitheater’s broader, ongoing sensory-inclusive initiative developed in partnership with KultureCity, a local nonprofit that nationally to promote sensory inclusion and accessibility for people with sensory processing disorders, including autism, PTSD and dementia. Since its founding in 2013, KultureCity has teamed up with dozens of local entities to open sensory rooms at:
