For many professionals, career growth isn’t just about promotions or resumes—it’s about finding the right people in your corner.
Across Birmingham, more women are turning to professional communities, mentorship groups and leadership organizations like Momentum to build confidence, expand their networks and grow into new opportunities.
To learn more about the impact of professional community in Birmingham, we sat down with three Momentum members who say the organization helped shape their careers and connections in the city.
Finding mentorship + community in Birmingham

For local leader Brittany A. Holloman, Momentum became an important part of building community after relocating to Birmingham. Known for its curriculum-based leadership programs, conferences and mentorship opportunities, Momentum has long worked to support women leaders across Alabama.
“When I first moved to Birmingham, I was looking for a meaningful way to learn the city, build genuine connections and become more professionally engaged.”
Brittany A. Holloman, Executive Director + CEO, HBCU C.A.R.E.S
She says Momentum immediately stood out as a space filled with ambitious women who genuinely wanted to help one another succeed.
Since joining, Holloman says the organization has helped Birmingham feel more like home through mentorship, networking and meaningful relationships formed within her co-mentoring group.
Professionally, she credits Momentum with helping her become more intentional in leadership, stronger in negotiation settings and more grounded in authentic leadership practices.
“In a city full of opportunities and connections, having a resource like Momentum keeps women ready for the next opportunity, the next conversation, and the next room they walk into.”

Boosting confidence (+ salaries!) for women across Birmingham

For Tasha Cox, Momentum started with a recommendation from a friend.
A colleague who completed Momentum’s Upward program often spoke about how the experience helped her stay grounded during difficult workdays and reminded her there was “a bigger picture.”
Since joining, she says her mindset—and career trajectory—has completely shifted.
“Instead of ‘Why me?’ the program constantly challenged me to ask myself, ‘Why not me?’
That mindset shift changed everything.”

That confidence translated directly into professional growth. Since becoming involved with Momentum, Cox has earned two promotions, and her salary has more than doubled.
Growing leadership skills + professional networks in Birmingham

That same sense of support is what drew Christalyn Cline deeper into the Momentum community after attending the Momentum Leadership Conference through her employer, Protective Life.
Her favorite part? The atmosphere was engaging, authentic and inclusive—a reminder that there is a community of support and development always within reach.
For Cline, one of Momentum’s most meaningful qualities is that it supports women no matter where they are professionally.
“It meets women where they are. Regardless of career stage, it’s never too late to start, renew or grow as a leader. Momentum helped strengthen my confidence as a leader and enhanced my leadership perspective.”
