Birmingham Museum of Art’s CEO Graham Boettcher departing July 31

Birmingham Museum of Art’s Director and CEO Graham C. Boettcher is stepping down on July 31st from his current role to become Director and CEO of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
Boettcher started his tenure at the BMA in 2006 as a curatorial fellow and became the museum’s first Curator of American Art.
In 2017, he was appointed BMA’s R. Hugh Daniels Director and CEO.
Boettcher: A decade of BMA accomplishments

Boettcher’s tenure has been marked by sustained institutional growth, scholarly excellence and a deep commitment to community engagement. Some of his accomplishments include:
- Strengthening the Museum’s financial position by increasing the endowment by more than $11.6 million
- Securing major acquisitions
- Advancing ambitious exhibitions and programs such as the recent “Monet to Matisse: French Moderns, 1850–1950” exhibit.
- Fostering a collaborative institutional culture and expanded partnerships across the city and region

What’s next? A smooth BMA leadership transition

Chantal Drake, BMA’s James Milton and Sallie R. Johnson Deputy Director, has been appointed by the board to serve as Interim Director and CEO beginning August 1, 2026.
Drake joined the BMA in January 2023, and has provided substantive oversight across all areas of the museum’s operations.
According to the Board’s press announcement, Boettcher will work closely with Board leadership and staff to ensure a smooth transition.
