On Saturday, July 11, the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) will host a free community event celebrating the 50th anniversary of Legacy Arena, one of Birmingham’s most iconic venues. Read on to learn what to expect!
Birmingham’s Legacy Arena is turning 50

Opened in 1976, Legacy Arena is a 17,000-capacity multi-use arena that has hosted countless national and international touring concerts, productions and sporting events over its 50-year history. Located on the BJCC’s campus at 1898 9th Ave N, Legacy Arena underwent a comprehensive, $125M modernization project in 2021.

To celebrate the arena’s 50th anniversary, the BJCC is hosting a free community event on Saturday, July 11. At the celebration, guests can partake in:
- A free concert with The Black Jacket Symphony
- Family-friendly activities like face painting and balloon artists
- Arcade-style games celebrating the arena’s sports history
- Opportunities to explore the arena, including access to premium club spaces
- Exclusive live screen-printing with anniversary swag provided by Yellowhammer Creative
- A first look at newly unveiled art installations and a commemorative mural exploring the 50-year history and cultural impact of Legacy Arena
During the concert portion of the evening, The Black Jacket Symphony will perform music made famous by some of the biggest names ever to grace the arena stage, spanning multiple generations and genres of music.
