This news will not surprise Magic City food-lovers. MELT, Birmingham’s own original “cheesy” sandwich spot has the best grilled cheese sandwich in Alabama, according to the foodie digital publication Tasting Table.

MELT: A “Birmingham Original” from food truck to restaurant

One of my fondest memories in the mid 2010’s was taking that first bite into a grilled cheese sandwich from the MELT food truck near Railroad Park. I’ll never forget the soft, but slightly crusty toasted bread, and the cheese literally melting in front of my eyes when I picked it up at the window.

Folks had never seen or tasted anything like it at the time, let alone from a food truck.

A couple of years later, I was enjoying that same mouthwatering cheesy sandwich at MELT’s new eatery in Avondale, this time paired with tomato basil soup. The perfect pairing.

The folks at Tasting Table declared MELT’s grilled cheese sandwich the best in the state after combing through local customer reviews on Reddit, Yelp, Tripadvisor and Facebook.

I kinda like the idea that Tasting Table chose to listen to locals in lieu of their deep bench of food experts and writers.

How is MELT doing?

MELT has opened and closed several restaurants over the years in the Magic City. I still miss the Avondale location and wing mural.

The good news, you can still pick up the state’s best grilled cheese sandwich in Hoover’s Stadium Trace development at 5219 Peridot Place, Suite 3.

And just last week in fast-growing Madison, Alabama, MELT opened up its third location statewide.

Here’s hoping they come back to Birmingham’s Southside! We need a good cheesy sandwich shop.
