The Bright Star Restaurant in Bessemer was named the most iconic steakhouse in Alabama in a recent article by Business Insider.

Read on for why this well-known “meat and three” dining spot made the list.

What makes The Bright Star an icon?

The well-known favorite has many claims to fame, including its status as the oldest family-owned restaurant in Alabama. Since opening in 1907, The Bright Star has since grown from its original 12-seat bar to a five-dining-room restaurant that seats up to 330 satisfied customers.

Its roots come from feeding “meat and three” lunches to the locals working in the coal, iron ore and steelmaking industries.

Business Insider’s list was determined based on a few key criteria:

  • Customer reviews
  • Local history
  • Longevity
  • Cultural significance

Considering that The Bright Star is one of the oldest restaurants in Alabama, it was bound to be among the top contenders.

“The James Beard Award-winning institution is known for its Greek-influenced steakhouse menu, especially its famous broiled snapper and tender steaks, all served in a grand, old-world dining room.”
