Gus’s Hot Dogs named best hot dog in Alabama by national publication

When it comes to iconic Birmingham eats, few spots have the staying power of Gus’s Hot Dogs—and now the downtown staple has national recognition to match.
Food and lifestyle publication Cheapism recently named Gus’s the best hot dog in Alabama in its roundup of the best hot dog spots in every state.
A win for Downtown Birmingham’s longtime hot dog joint

In the feature, Cheapism praised Gus’s as:
“A Birmingham institution since 1947… the kind of no-frills counter that earns loyalty by doing the basics exceptionally well.”
The publication specifically highlighted Gus’s signature chargrilled hot dog and its beloved onion sauce—two staples that have helped make the longtime downtown shop a Birmingham favorite for generations.
Owner Lee Pantazis said he’s grateful for the recognition, but was quick to share the spotlight with fellow local eateries.
“Obviously I’m grateful they picked us. I really appreciate the press and the acknowledgement. But there’s so many cool places in Birmingham… it’s nice to be acknowledged, because there are plenty of other amazing restaurants.
If we haven’t gotten the chance to serve you, come on by. We’d love to. But also, if we’re not your favorite hot dog spot, go support your favorite hot dog spot.

What should you order at Gus’s?

Pantazis says… whatever you want!
“One of the reasons that we have found success is that I’m not going to tell you how to eat your hot dog. You want a burnt hot dog covered in ketchup? Cool. We’ve got you. Whatever you like, we can do it.
We just thank you for coming here—for talking to us, hanging out, waiting in line and for spending your hard earned dollar with us.”
Still, if you’re looking for the owner’s personal pick, his favorite is the chili small dog—perfectly spicy, sweet, salty and fatty.
Not a hot dog person? Gus’s also serves burgers, bologna sandwiches and breakfast sandwiches—each with its own loyal following.
