We know air travel is a hot topic in the news lately, but we continue to be grateful that travel in and out of our home base of BHM (the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport if you’re new here) has been smooth, easy and…dare we say it…enjoyable.
It’s not just the fast-flowing security lines, living plant wall and barbecue vending machine that keeps us coming back: There are some exciting changes on the horizon for Birmingham’s airport.
Get the scoop and get packing now!
BHM adds a new airline with 2 nonstop destinations

Breeze Airways, BHM”s newest airline, begins new routes this summer. (Mary Helene Hall /Bham Now)
Any time you can eliminate a layover, you can consider that a travel “win.”
That gets easier from Birmingham this summer when Breeze Airways flies into BHM. The airline, which has been named a top “Best Domestic Airline” by Travel + Leisure for four consecutive years, begins flights on July 4th weekend. Here are their first nonstop routes from BHM, including Breeze Airline’s low price:
- Fort Lauderdale (nonstop on Mondays + Fridays starting July 3, from $59 one way)
- Raleigh-Durham (nonstop on Mondays + Fridays starting July 3, from $49 one way)
More service, more flights, more seats

Every business traveler knows: Adding flights to existing routes not only expands options for timing—it can help soften prices, too.
The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will add an additional flight per day to Denver, Orlando and Nashville soon. That Nashville route has bigger implications: With Southwest working to establish Nashville as one of its major connectivity points, that means you’re just a quick flight away from easier, quicker service to some of your favorite destinations. This additional connectivity opens Birmingham up to places that were previously harder and more time-consuming to get to.
And the more we all continue to choose BHM as our airport (vs schlepping to Atlanta), the more options open up for nonstop destinations. Not that there’s currently a shortage of those. Once the Breeze flights blow in later this summer, nonstop cities served out of BHM will include:
- Atlanta
- Baltimore
- Charlotte
- Chicago
- Dallas/Ft. Worth
- Denver
- Detroit
- Fort Lauderdale
- Houston
- Las Vegas
- Miami
- Nashville
- New York City
- Orlando
- Raleigh-Durham
- Philadelphia
- Phoenix – available seasonally
- Tampa
- Washington, D.C.
Upgrades are coming soon to a concourse near you

Personally, we considered the restrooms at BHM to be among the best-of-class already, but they’re about to get even nicer, beginning over on concourse C and extending to other areas in phases for minimal disruption (we appreciate that!).
Starting in May, look for new flooring, freshly painted walls, better lighting, and—here’s what anyone juggling a carry-on and multiple bags and bottles of water will appreciate: Stall doors that swing out instead of in. 🙌
Stay tuned for more great news, announcements and fun things ahead as the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport celebrates its 95th anniversary and honors the country’s 250th birthday with a meaningful exhibit.
