The last two Winn-Dixie supermarkets in Birmingham have begun store closing sales.

On Wednesday, store closing signs appeared and discounts between 20 to 40 percent were posted throughout the store.

Below are the locations of the two remaining Birmingham-area stores and their closing dates, according to Winn-Dixie staff.

Winn-Dixie leaves Birmingham after 60+ years

The Florida-based grocery chain was founded in 1925 and has had a presence in Alabama since the 1960s, when it acquired the Birmingham-based chain of Hill’s Food Stores.

In October 2025, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. announced that it planned to exit the entire state of Alabama by the end of 2025 to focus on its markets in Florida and Georgia.

The century-old company operated 20 stores in 15 Alabama cities, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery and Mobile.

Despite finding new retailers for most of its Alabama Winn-Dixie locations, the grocer released a statement in December announcing they were unable to secure a buyer for the 4476 Montevallo Road and 500 Inverness Corners stores.

In addition to the Birmingham locations, Winn-Dixie was unable to find retailers to purchase stores in Fairhope, Tuscaloosa and Opelika.
