Prosper, a local nonprofit focused on job access, is going full-speed-ahead in 2026 with connecting Birmingham’s job seekers to employment and training opportunities.

Founded in 2021, the nonprofit works to improve Birmingham’s economy by bridging the gap between employers and workers, particularly those who are economically unstable. Its creation comes after the COVID-19 pandemic employment dip.

Resources like this newsletter are important during a time when worker confidence is low due to layoffs, a slow job market and economic uncertainty, CNBC reported in November. Younger workers are especially affected by the job market due to fewer entry-level job openings.

Part of that difficulty, Prosper says, is due to a lack of direct communication from employers who are actively seeking new employees. The goal of the Job Connector Newsletter is to put those local openings in the hands of job seekers.

“There are many gaps that prevent people from accessing great jobs and one of them that is most in our control is communication. Too often, talented people do not hear about the opportunities that are available. We believe the Job Connector can help close that gap.”

J.W. Carpenter, President of Prosper

The newsletter launched late February 2025, and today, it reaches an audience of more than 3,000 people.

Some companies that work with Prosper to feature their openings include:

  • Cooper Green Mercy Health
  • Birmingham City Schools
  • Alabama Association of Nonprofits
  • Birmingham-based small businesses

The long-term mission is for the Job Connector Newsletter to become “a go-to tool for employers to share opportunities they have and for seekers to more easily receive an array of available jobs and trainings,” the organization said.

“Job access has long been a focus of Prosper’s mission. We strive to provide a resource in the form of direct communication to intentionally reach more people seeking employment and receive more opportunities from those seeking employees.”

Angela Abdur-Rasheed, Prosper Director of Communication and Community Engagement
