2 Birmingham Winn-Dixie stores closing permanently in early 2026

Two Winn-Dixie stores in the Birmingham area will close in early 2026 as the supermarket chain shifts its strategic focus to Florida and select Georgia markets.
Winn-Dixie leaving Alabama; two locations without buyers

In mid-October, Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. announced that it planned to exit the entire state of Alabama by the end of 2025 to focus on its markets in Florida and Georgia. The Florida-based supermarket chain was founded in 1925 and has had a presence in Alabama since the 1960s, when it acquired the Birmingham-based chain of Hill’s Food Stores.
As of October 14, Winn-Dixie operated 20 stores in 15 Alabama cities, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery and Mobile. Although many of those stores have reopened under the Food City and ALDI brands, several are without buyers—including two in Birmingham:

Bham Now reached out to The Winn-Dixie Company to confirm the closure.
“We are finalizing multiple store divestitures as part of our strategic focus on Florida and select Georgia markets. While many stores are transitioning to new retailers, a buyer has not been secured at this time for the Birmingham Winn-Dixie stores located at 4476 Montevallo Road and 500 Inverness Corners. Both stores are expected to close early next year.
We recognize the impact of this news, and our top priority is supporting our associates through this transition with the care, respect and support they deserve.”
