On Tuesday, October 28, Amazon announced to its employees that it would be cutting 14,000 corporate roles. So this begs the question for Birmingham residents: What about Bessemer’s fulfillment center?
Amazon layoffs don’t impact Bessemer fulfillment center
The layoffs come in an effort to “reduce bureaucracy” and use AI resources more.
The message shared with the employees stated:
“We’re working hard to support everyone whose role is impacted, including offering most employees 90 days to look for a new role internally (the timing will vary some based on local laws), and our recruiting teams will prioritize internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles within Amazon.
For our teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll offer them transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits, and more.”

But, there’s good news in this for local folks: Amazon fulfillment centers are not impacted since this was a corporate update. Which means employees at Bessemer’s Amazon Fulfillment Center are not affected.
Amazon also announced it would be hiring seasonal employees during the holidays. According to Shemeeka Johnson in Amazon’s Communication & Corporate Responsibility department, there will be a projected 1,700 full-time, part-time and seasonal positions added.

To this day, the fulfillment center employs nearly 2,000 people in Jefferson County.
