Two months after closing its longtime location on Morris Avenue, popular local restaurant and cocktail bar Carrigan’s has officially opened in a brand-new development in downtown Birmingham. We met with owner David Carrigan to get a sneak peek inside the new establishment.

About Carrigan’s Public House

Founded in 2013 by local developer David Carrigan, Carrigan’s offers elevated, creative takes on pub-food classics—like its famous gourmet corn dog—and an extensive beer and cocktail selection in a distinctive industrial setting. Popular for both post-work drinks and company events, Carrigan’s original Morris Avenue location featured indoor and outdoor seating as well as a rooftop deck with charming views of the city.

In 2024, David Carrigan announced his plans to move Carrigan’s to an exciting, brand-new development in downtown Birmingham called The William. Led by David Carrigan’s firm, Clovenstone Real Estate Development, The William is located in a historic furniture/department store building and will include:

  • 27 boutique apartment units in three different styles: The SkylightThe Alley and The Avenue.
  • A street-facing retail space
  • An exclusive rooftop penthouse and bar
  • A new home for Carrigan’s

Although Carrigan’s is located at 1913 3rd Ave N, the primary entrance to the new establishment is nestled in the alley between 2nd Ave. and 3rd Ave N. Guests can enter the alley on 19th Street N (across from McWane Science Center) or 20th Street N (across from Trattoria Zaza).

Inside, guests familiar with Carrigan’s will feel right at home in the new location. Carrigan’s cozy industrial aesthetic has been meticulously replicated, with several decor items—such as a steel railroad track and the iconic Land Rover—making it over to the new location.

“Every bit of wood in our new location was reclaimed from the building. When we cut out the atrium, we saved all the old hard pine wood joists, milled them down and utilized them throughout the space.”

One new addition is a gorgeous marble bartop, handmade by David Carrigan using antique marble.

“The marble bartop is made from marble top dressers I sourced in New Jersey and functions as a railroad map of Birmingham. Downtown Birmingham is situated in the corner, with lines running all the way up to North Birmingham.”

Another big change at the new Carrigan’s is the transition from pub-style finger food to elevated table service. Although Carrigan’s has kept several of its beloved dishes—like its kale caesar salad, house-cut fries, house-smoked wings and the famous Carrigan’s corndog—many new and exciting dishes are now on the menu.

“One of my favorite new dishes is the Lamb Shank Roast—it looks beautiful and tastes amazing. And the Steak and Fries is ridiculous, in a good way—the plate is simply covered in steak. I worked with David at Brät Brot, and we’ve decided to bring back the famous Brät Brot Burger as well.”

Carrigan’s opens Tuesday, Oct. 28

Although official hours are yet to be announced, Carrigan’s will be open from 5-10PM starting Tuesday, October 28, through Saturday, November 1.

“We have a fantastic team; a lot of people from the previous location as well as a few new faces. Everybody is so thrilled to throw open the doors of our new location and start serving our guests!”
