Winn-Dixie is leaving Birmingham + Alabama by the end of 2025
Reading time: 2 minutes

Winn-Dixie announced plans Tuesday, Oct. 21 to leave Birmingham and the entire state of Alabama by the end of 2025 to focus on its stores in Florida and Georgia.
Before they depart, the company hopes to sell off all remaining Winn-Dixie stores to other grocers.
Earlier this month, the company announced they were closing three Birmingham metro stores in November and said they would become Food City grocery stores.
What’s next? How to follow store transitions

Below is a statement from Winn-Dixie about their next steps:
“We are finalizing multiple store divestitures as part of our strategic focus on Florida and select Georgia markets. Real-time updates regarding store transitions by city and state will be available soon at segrocers.com/updates
“We recognize that these changes affect people first, and our top priority is supporting every associate through the transition. Many of the stores are being sold to retailers with similar grocery models, which means they’ll have comparable staffing needs to serve their customers. We’re working closely with each buyer to ensure a smooth handoff and to provide associates with the opportunity to be considered for open positions under the new banners, where available. Every impacted associate will be treated with the care, respect and support they deserve, and eligible associates who are unable to secure a position with the new owners will receive severance.
“We’re deeply grateful to our customers, associates and communities across Alabama for their loyalty and support over the years, and we appreciate their understanding as we move through this transition.”
