Birmingham + Shelby County receive $330K+ for recycling projects
Reading time: 2 minutes

Thanks to grants from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), the City of Birmingham and the Shelby County Commission have resources to bolster their recycling programs.
ADEM awarded $137,837 to Birmingham and $200,210 to Shelby County. In addition to those two entities, 16 other solid waste authorities, counties, cities and other groups across Alabama received grants, totaling $2,529,388.
The Alabama Legislature passed the Solid Wastes and Recyclable Materials Management Act in 2008. This allowed the state to levy a $1-per-ton fee on garbage disposed of into the state’s landfills.
ADEM has awarded more than $34 million dollars in grants since the Alabama Recycling Fund’s (ARF) first year in operation in 2009.
“This is the 17th year of the grant program, and we can clearly see the impact this funding is having as recycling continues to grow in Alabama. Every item that is recycled is one less item that ends up in a landfill or littered alongside our roads, on our land or in our water.”
ADEM Director Ed Poolos
The City of Birmingham plans to use most of their $137,837 grant to support school recycling programs through Keep Birmingham Beautiful.
Birmingham has now received a total of more than $1 million in grants from the ARF program.
