Introducing Nightcap, downtown Birmingham’s new “desert lounge”
A new dessert lounge is coming to downtown Birmingham! Bamboo on 2nd co-owners Bernie Smith and Todd Childs announced their new concept on Bamboo on 2nd’s social media, stating:
“We’re excited to bring something fresh and fun to the neighborhood that we both love so much and look forward to seeing y’all there!”

According to Todd, the idea for a new dessert lounge came about after the closure of Aviné, a former French-inspired wine bar and retail shop at 2225 2nd Ave N.
“When [Aviné] closed, several business owners along 2nd Avenue put our heads together and said, ‘If we were to do something in the space, what would it be?’
It snowballed from there, and the next thing we know, we’re opening a new dessert lounge.”

Located just across the street from Bamboo on 2nd, Nightcap was designed to help cater to the demand for post-dinner
“We don’t offer dessert at Bamboo on 2nd, but our guests ask all the time. Unfortunately, most of the other restaurants on the block don’t have a vast dessert menu, either.
We conceptualized Nightcap as a late-night place, somewhere you could go after dinner to get a bite of something sweet.
We also wanted to appeal to the service industry, so when people get off work at 11PM they can a late night snack—think a basket of French fries or a grilled cheese and cup of tomato soup.”

Open evenings starting at 5PM, Nightcap will offer:
- A full bar serving liquor, beer and wine
- 10-12 desserts sources from local artisan bakers like ‘The Handel’, ‘Sorelle’, and ‘The Greek Kouzina’
- A full-range of coffee drinks (with and without alcohol)
- A small menu of savory treats, such as grilled cheese + tomato soup and a basket of fries
According to the owners, Nightcap is expected to open in the near future—follow the new establishment on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date on its progress.
“Bernie and I both live within a block of here and walk past Nightcap every day to get to Bamboo, and it felt like the absolute right thing to do. We are so excited to bring something new to the neighborhood that we love so much.”
