Calling all Birmingham-area families, dance fans and community lovers: The Dance Foundation is turning 50 and throwing a party to remember. Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 16, because this golden celebration, happening at The Edge in Homewood, is packed with family fun, dancing and a whole lot of joy. Oh, and it’s totally free!
Here’s why you don’t want to miss it.
A celebration 50 years in the making

Since 1975, The Dance Foundation (TDF) has brought the magic of dance to thousands of people across Birmingham and beyond. Whether it’s kids twirling in a tutu, students learning through movement in local schools or artists rehearsing in the Foundation’s studio space, TDF has spent five decades proving that dance is for everyone.
Now they’re celebrating their golden anniversary with a community-wide event: 50 YEARS GOLD: A Community Dance Party.
- When: Saturday, August 16 | 5–7PM
- Where: The Edge—817 Green Springs Hwy, Homewood
- Admission: Free!
- Rain Date (just in case): Saturday, August 23

50 dances for 50 years

Get ready to groove! This dance party features a nostalgic, interactive lineup of iconic moves—from the Hustle and the Macarena to the Cupid Shuffle. Kids and families can also jump into movement games, parachute play and Movement to Music demos (TDF’s signature early childhood dance program).
Bonus: There will be food and drinks from local vendors, and good vibes all around.
“It’s all about joy and connection, we’ve spent 50 years bringing dance into studios, schools and community spaces—and now we get to celebrate with the people who’ve made it all possible.”
Diane Litsey, Executive Director of The Dance Foundation.
A local nonprofit with a big impact

More than just a dance studio, The Dance Foundation is a nonprofit committed to equity in arts education. Here’s how they make an impact:
- Dance Studio Classes for ages one to adult, featuring live music for classes through first grade and observation areas for parents.
- Dance Partners Program, which brings movement-based learning into schools across the region.
- Space Rental Program, making space available for artists to teach, rehearse and perform, reaching their own constituents.
- Inclusive Programming for dancers of all abilities and backgrounds.
Every week, over 1,500 people walk through TDF’s Homewood studio—and countless more experience the joy of dance through outreach programs.
Join the celebration

Whether you’ve danced with TDF before or are just discovering them, this event is a chance to move, laugh, create and celebrate one of Birmingham’s most beloved arts organizations.
