Recovery is a journey that looks different for everyone, but one thing is true across the board: connection and creative expression can play a powerful role in the healing process. That’s the heart behind Reading, Writing & Recovery, a new free workshop series launching in Pelham.

Designed for anyone impacted by addiction, whether you’re in recovery, supporting a loved one who is or seeking a safe space to grow, this workshop uses writing as a way to rebuild confidence, strengthen communication and rediscover joy.

Led by two organizations rooted in Birmingham’s recovery scene, the series is making a positive impact. Read on to learn more and how to sign up.

Behind Reading, Writing & Recovery

(L-R) NAMED NEEDED FROM CLIENT (Addiction Prevention Coalition)

This meaningful series is made possible thanks to two local organizations with a significant role in Birmingham’s addiction and recovery community:

  • Addiction Prevention Coalition: a nonprofit working to break the stigma around addiction and shine a light on recovery throughout Central Alabama.
  • Keystone Club: a recovery-focused space that provides a safe, loving environment where individuals and families can heal, grow and support one another.

Together, they’ve created a free writing workshop series—professionally led and open to all—that uses storytelling and self-expression as powerful tools for healing, reflection and connection.

“The Addiction Prevention Coalition is proud to collaborate with the Keystone Club to offer free, professionally-led writing workshops, and we encourage everyone to join us either in-person or online as we harness the power of words to foster healing and build community.”

Why Reading, Writing & Recovery matters

Addiction Prevention Coalition
Join a professionally led Reading, Writing & Recovery workshop in Pelham. (Addiction Prevention Coalition)

As a writer, I can say firsthand that writing can be incredibly therapeutic. And, when you let your imagination run free, there’s a kind of energy and excitement that’s hard to beat.

But Reading, Writing & Recovery is about so much more. It’s a way to build gaps between people, experiences and communities in order to break down stigma and open the door to genuine understanding and support.

Each workshop blends guided writing prompts with open discussion in order to give participants the chance to reflect, create and share.

Topics range from imaginative storytelling to practical workplace communication, but all are centered around empowerment and self discovery.
