The wait is (almost) over!

Way back in early 2023, we reported that beloved Downtown Birmingham restaurants El Barrio and Paramount were included in a proposal for a new development in West Homewood. More than two years later, the restaurants are putting the finishing touches on their highly-anticipated second locations—and we got a sneak peek inside.

Read on for a look at the new West Row development.

West Row brings new lofts, townhomes + more to West Homewood

Located near the Oxmoor Road and I-65 interchange, West Row is an 83,000-square-foot mixed-use development that includes 18 lofts and 51 townhomes anchored by two restaurants, El Barrio and Paramount.

These two Birmingham hot spots are lauded by locals, recently named the best Mexican restaurant and best sports bar in the state, respectively.

We met up with Ben Smith, a longtime partner of the restaurants and owner of The Electric, who gave us a tour inside.

A look inside El Barrio + Paramount

One of the first things you’ll notice walking in is that the two restaurants are connected by a small hallway, where you’ll find the shared restrooms and Paramount’s iconic arcade.

It includes:

  • Skeeball
  • Basketball
  • Claw machines
  • + more

El Barrio at West Row

On El Barrio’s side, the dining room features ample seating with a large circular booth at the center. This round booth will also have a table-top lazy susan, perfect for sharing your queso fundido or chunky guacamole with friends.

The mural, an El Barrio staple, was painted by Kevin Booth, a Birmingham artist and former employee at the original downtown location.

In addition to the main dining room, there’s also a private room, perfect for larger parties, celebrations and events.

The full-service bar, which was still being finished at the time of our visit, is huge—with plenty of seating, mirrored walls and spacious countertops, it’s the perfect spot to have a drink, wait for your table or even enjoy your meal.

Paramount at West Row

On the other side, you’ll see some of Paramount’s signature retro decor, including:

  • Arcade games
  • License plates covering the host stand + bar
  • Tire rims

The dining room and bar features several televisions, seating, an extensive draft beer system and even a patio for outdoor dining.

Plus, there’s ample parking at West Row, so you won’t have to fight for a good spot.

When to expect a grand opening

If you’re like me and have been eagerly waiting to check it out—don’t worry, it won’t be much longer.

According to Smith, the two restaurants are working on finalizing their liquor license and adding some finishing touches before operation begins officially.

Stay tuned on the restaurants’ social media for all updates, including soft opening and grand opening celebrations.
