Birmingham is buzzing! Tourism in 2024 brought in record-breaking numbers, with more visitors, more jobs and more community impact than weโve seen in yearsโand thereโs even more to celebrate ahead.
What does this mean for Birmingham?

Tourism is booming in the Greater Birmingham region. In 2024, we welcomed more than 4 million overnight visitorsโa 2% increase over 2023 and the highest total since 2017.
Jefferson County alone accounted for 14% of all travelers in Alabama and 11% of the stateโs tourism spending, making it the second-largest tourism market in the state.
This continued growth underscores the importance of tourism as a key economic driver for the region, supporting local businesses, creating jobs and contributing vital tax dollars to community services.
Breaking down the impact
In 2024, Jefferson County tourism generated:
- A record-breaking $2.57 billion in 2024 economic impact
- More than 51,000 jobs
- $302 million in tax revenue generated for our community
- 4+ million overnight visitors
In addition to the economic highlights, the GBCVB announced the launch of its new Tourism Hall of Fame. The first inductee: longtime board member and Alabama State Senator Jabo Waggoner, honored for his decades of dedication to advancing the stateโs tourism industry.
