Local educator named Alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year

Can we get a round of applause for Aubrey Bennett, the newest Alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year (2025-2026)? A 12th-grade educator at George Washington Carver High School, Mr. Bennett was honored during the annual Teacher of the Year Reception in the state capitol on May 7.
Birmingham City Schools educator named Alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year
Every year, the Alabama Department of Education administers the Alabama Teacher of the Year program to celebrate educators who “demonstrate excellence in teaching and make [a] significant impact on their students and communities.” For the 2025-2026 school year, the Alabama Teacher of the Year program chose Aubrey Bennett, a distinguished educator at George Washington Carver High School.
“We are proud of the great work Mr. Bennett contributes at Carver every day. He makes an impact on the scholars at Carver every day. Now, as Alabama’s Teacher of the Year, he will get to share his knowledge with other educators across the state.”

A 12th-grade teacher of U.S. Government, Economics and Advanced Placement (AP) African-American History, Bennett has 17 years of experience in education, the past 11 of which were at Carver. Bennett also serves as the sponsor of the Student Government Association and the school’s Attendance Liaison.
