Did you know that our very own Children’s of Alabama is ranked among the nation’s best hospitals and the best hospital for children in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report?

It’s no wonder they’re also doing great work in their transplant division.

Let’s get to know the Transplant Center at Children’s of Alabama and see why we need to celebrate the good work going on right here in Birmingham.

Inside Children’s of Alabama’s Transplant Center

Pediatric Transplant Center at Children's of Alabama
Children’s of Alabama’s expert pediatric transplant team has done 300 (and counting) transplants. (Children’s of Alabama)

Since Children’s of Alabama became a transplant center in 2013, there have been 318 patients who have received a transplant—whether it be heart, liver or kidney.

The multidisciplinary Transplant Center fulfills Children’s of Alabama’s long-time vision to house pediatric transplant and related services all under one roof.

This consolidation takes away some of the stressors that being in the hospital has on families. Plus, it gives the transplant team opportunities to provide the best possible care for their patients.

We spoke to the administrative director of Transplant Services to help us shine a light on all the healthcare providers, transplant patients and their families.

“Children’s offers care specifically designed to meet pediatric patients’ medical, social, developmental and emotional needs.

You will not find a more dedicated team to provide your child’s care.”

Meloneysa Hubbard, Administrative Director of Transplant Services, Children’s of Alabama

Meloneysa Hubbard started in transplant care as a new nurse in 1987. She fell in love with it, and before long, she shifted her entire career to pediatric care.

In 2012, she joined the heart transplant team at Children’s of Alabama.

Now, Meloneysa is the Administrative Director of Transplant Services and develops programs to make sure patients get the best care throughout their transplant journey.

“My job allows me to see the positive impact of organ donation at the time of transplant and watch patients grow through the decades.

Organ donation is truly the gift of life.”

Celebrate National Pediatric Transplant Week!

Happy Pediatric Transplant Week, Birmingham. (Children’s of Alabama)

For Children’s of Alabama staff, patients and families, celebrating pediatric transplants is a whole lot more than a week- or month-long celebration. It’s a celebration of life! A time to recognize the courage of transplant patients, donors and their families.

While Children’s celebrates organ donation and transplantation every day, the month of April is especially symbolic.

This week, April 23-29 is National Pediatric Transplant Week, and Children’s is celebrating the best way they know how: with their people.

Throughout the entire month, the Benjamin Russell Hospital is lit up in blue and green—the official organ donation colors.
