As the Birmingham weather warms up and jasmine starts to bloom, I’m eager to fill my entire home with bright colors and fun pillows for the perfect springtime touch.

Last week, I toured Ballard Designs and got to chat with a few leading design experts who were excited to check out the new space.

Now, I’m sharing their advice for freshening up your Birmingham home this spring.

Tips for decorating your home this spring: 3 Birmingham designers weigh in

Since I’m itching to get my hands on some pieces to spruce up my home, I asked the local designers: What is your biggest tip for decorating this spring?

Here’s what they said.

1. Build around timeless treasures

I can’t help but stare at the wall of beautiful handmade rugs when I pass by English Village Lane on 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham.

Angie Burge is the genius who runs the show, and I was starstruck when I met her and some of her team, Alton and Claire, at Ballard Designs.

Their advice for home decor? Find something timeless.

  • Angie: “When it comes to your particular space, it’s great to pick something traditional and something that you can attach yourself to emotionally, and then build around that.”
  • Alton: “You need to think: ‘Five or 10 years from now, I still get excited when I pop into the space and see [this].’ Ignore the trends and see what you like so it’s timeless for your home.”
  • Claire: “Find things that are passed down from your family or things that are special to you and keep them around.”

2. Don’t forget: Your patio deserves decorating, too

Hundley Hilton Interiors is all about the playful details, and owners Janie and Elizabeth are the epitome of that.

Topping off their bright and bubbly spirits were the perfect spring decor tips.

  • Janie: “Spring is a good time to clean out your space and get rid of anything that is not bringing you joy. Do a little refresh; bring in a couple of styling items like lamps or flowers to freshen up the space.”
  • Elizabeth: “While decorating your home for the summertime, you feel like you’re bringing the indoors out. We love having beautiful outdoor living spaces and creating rooms and an ambiance outside. Ballard does a nice job with really pretty outdoor living options that are reasonably priced, good quality and beautifully done.”

3. Shop with a plan

If it wasn’t evident enough, Caroline McDonald showed me how chic Ballard Designs really is.

She gave me the perfect two-fold advice for sprucing up my home this spring: Plan before you purchase, and use colors!

“I’ve always said that shopping with a plan is better than happening upon things. Bring a measuring tape, draw it out, get swatches—all those things.

And definitely bring in color. If you normally like blue and white, add a third accent color in the pink or orange family. You don’t have to use the primary colors in the color wheel, but find something.”

Nestled in The Hardwick—a redevelopment of a historic 110+-year-old building on 1st Avenue South—Ballard Designs is already taking the Magic City design world by storm.
