Craving sushi? You’re in luck—Birmingham has tons of awesome spots to get your fix, whether you’re into classic nigiri, over-the-top specialty rolls, or even sushi burritos.

We rounded up 28 local sushi restaurants you’ve gotta try, from longtime favorites to hidden gems.

1. Shiki

Not only does Shiki have incredible sushi, but they also have an amazing happy hour. Their charming outdoor patio is the perfect spot to share some sushi and cocktails after a long day.

2. Rock N Roll Sushi

True to the name, you can find rockin’ rolls like the Jam Sesh, Tour Bus and British Invasion Roll.

3. Surin

Surin is a Birmingham staple, and for good reason. For over 30 years, they’ve been serving authentic Thai cuisine and sushi.

4. Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

Kobe, now located in Inverness Corners off Highway 280, serves a delicious sushi menu with great lunch specials. They also offer Teppanyaki, commonly known in the U.S. as “hibachi”, where chefs cook your meal right in front of you.

5. IKKO

IKKO sushi in Five Points South is a can’t-miss. While you’re at it, try their delicious bao buns with your order.

6. Jinsei Sushi

If you’re looking for high quality fish and an elegant dining experience, Jinsei in Homewood is the place for you. Their menu features sashimi, specialty rolls and (my favorite) poke bowls.

Did you know Jinsei also has weekend brunch? They even serve a breakfast handroll—bacon, scrambled egg and sushi rice wrapped in soy paper with jalapeño salsa garnish.

With two locations in Lakeview and Trussville, Umami is a hot spot for Asian fusion. Their menu ranges from raw appetizers like tuna tartare and ceviche to specialty rolls and even tacos.

8. Bamboo on 2nd

Looking for the perfect dinner spot for a date or catching up with friends? Located on 2nd Ave N across from El Barrio, Bamboo’s menu features a variety of cocktails, sushi, poke and other Japanese-inspired eats.

9. Sushi Village

With two Birmingham-area locations, Sushi Village has a huge selection of more than 40 sushi rolls and plenty of hibachi combos to choose from.

10. Mt Fuji Japanese Sushi Steakhouse

While Mt Fuji in Lee Branch is best known for its hibachi tables, they also serve a wide selection of sushi rolls, sashimi and nigiri.

If you’re looking for high quality sushi rolls with a creative flair, Ginza on Valleydale Road is the spot for you. Sit at the sushi bar and watch your rolls being prepared or head to the dining room for tasty Korean BBQ.

Located on Highway 280 near Greystone, Chuck’s Fish is perfect for a romantic date night—even if the date is just you and some beautiful fresh sushi.

13. Konomi

Konomi in Trussville has been a reliable and tasty sushi spot for over 20 years. Try one of their dozens of sushi rolls or get the best of both worlds with a bento box.

14. Yummy Bowl

At Yummy Bowl, you can build your own noodle or rice bowl and choose as many vegetables, meats and sauces as you want. Plus, they have a wide selection of sushi and raw appetizers to enjoy with your bowl.

15. Bricktop’s

If you weren’t aware of Bricktop’s sushi options, now you know. In addition to elegant steak and seafood dishes, their menu features rolls like the shrimp tempura and firecracker.

16. Maki Fresh

Located in Cahaba Village, Maki Fresh is a go-to for fresh, clean ingredients from rolls to bowls and more. They also have plenty of options for a gluten-free or vegan diet.

17. Nori Thai & Sushi

Nori specializes in Thai classics like pad see ew and curry, but their sushi menu is equally impressive with more than 30 rolls.

18. Okinawa Sushi & Hibachi

Okinawa has just about everything: hibachi, bento boxes, sushi appetizers, sushi rolls, hand rolls…the list goes on! Their deep-fried tempura rolls are a must-try.

19. Blue Sushi

Ever since Blue Sushi opened at The Summit in 2023, it’s been a huge hit. The menu is full of unique options, and even has plenty of vegan-friendly options.

20. Abhi

Owned by Abhi Sainju, Abhi’s menu centers the flavors of his home country, Nepal. Without formal culinary training, he honed his skills by experimenting with ingredients like octopus, salmon belly and braised eel.

21. Osaka Sushi Bar

Located at the corner of Caldwell Mill and Valleydale Road, Osaka’s menu features a variety of sushi, hibachi and more. If you’re balling on a budget, the lunch specials are a great deal.

22. Ocean

This Five Points South restaurant has more than just seafood dishes, they also serve a killer sushi menu including a filet mignon roll.
