Post Office Pies has some of the best pizza in Birmingham, and I’d even go so far to say their Margherita pizza is the best I’ve ever had! Topped with juicy roasted baby tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, light sauce and fresh basil, this pizza is bursting with flavors.

Cheesy Tip: Pair one of their delicious pizzas with a local beer for the perfect combo.

3. Tortugas Pizza

If you’re in the mood for authentic Chicago-style pizza in Birmingham, Tortuga’s is the place to go. Their pizza has won awards from various local publications and was listed in “100 Dishes To Eat In Alabama Before You Die” by I Love Alabama Food.

Cheesy Tip: Try it deep-dish style…you’ll thank me later.

4. Iron City Pizza Company

Iron City Pizza is all about being fresh and local. All of their sauces, doughs and dressings are made fresh in-house daily, and they partner with local farms to source their ingredients. If you’re a fan of mushrooms, the Legion Field of Shrooms is a must-try with an assortment of shrooms, cheeses and truffle oil.

Cheesy Tip: Get the Green Springs Goat pizza. It’s our fav.

5. Pizzeria G.M.

Pizzeria G.M. brings the high-class culinary flavors of its sister restaurant Gianmarcos to you in a casual atmosphere. Although all their pizzas are incredible, I recommend getting The Ham & Potato or The Tommie—they both pack some serious flavor.

Cheesy Tip: Ever had Conecuh sausage on pizza? Here’s your chance.

6. Bettola

Bettola’s Italian food is top-notch, and a taste of their pizzas will make you feel like you’ve been transported to Naples. You can get any of their delicious stone-fired pies for lunch or dinner—I recommend the Prosciutto e Mascarpone.

Lé Fresca is authentic pizza all the way, serving it true Italian style with special flour imported from Italy. This pizza is delivered to you unsliced, but don’t worry, the waiter will slice it for you upon request. Fun fact: in Italy, they eat theirs with a knife and fork.

Pizza Grace is a pizzeria at Mercantile on Morris in Birmingham that you have to try out. What sets Pizza Grace apart from the competition? It’s the dough. They use a three-ingredient, naturally leavened dough, which is responsible for the pizza’s well-textured and flavorful crust.

Cheesy Tip: Eat your pizza outside and then walk next door to Cannella Gelato for dessert.

9. De Vinci’s Pizza

Da Vinci Homewood

De Vinci’s in Homewood is cozy and warm—it’s everything an Italian joint should be. And the building has stood the test of time as booming Homewood has blossomed around it. Their pizzas are cheesy, thick and great to share, or try the eggplant Parm if you need a pizza break.

Cheesy Tip: Get their featured Mona Lisa pizza—it’s a work of art!

Established in 1964, Davenport’s is one of the original pizza restaurants not only in the Birmingham area, but the entire South. The Mountain Brook location is an institution, with a sister restaurant that opened in Vestavia in 2022. Regardless of which location you choose, Davenport’s is known for its made-from-scratch pizza and family-friendly atmosphere.

Cheesy Tip: This is the perfect place to take the kiddos. Davenport’s offers a casual setting with nostalgic movie posters and vintage video games.

The Filling Station is a unique spot with some even more unique pizzas (and formats: Get your pizza on cauliflower crust or as a flatbread, stromboli or calzone). Made to look like an old-fashioned gas station from the outside, this spot serves pies with toppings ranging from eggplant to Buffalo shrimp.

Cheesy Tip: Order one of their delicious “tune-ups”—appetizers like toasted ravioli or Italian quesadillas—to go with your pizza!

12. Troup’s Pizza

Ok, we are drooling over Troup’s Pizza in Cahaba Heights, especially the Happy Hippie. Toppings: spinach, mushrooms, Roma tomatoes, artichoke hearts, shaved red onions, blue cheese crumbles, house cheese blend and pesto sauce.

Cheesy Tip: Break out of your comfort zone and order one of their deliciously unique pizzas. If you’re more carnivore than Happy Hippie, this is a top choice for meat lovers, where options include bacon, capicola, Philly-style beef and even meatballs!

Founded in 1986, Rocky’s Pizza and Italian Foods was a legendary pizzeria and Italian food joint opened by Dennis Dunlap. He named the restaurant after Rocky Marciano, a professional boxer who held the world heavyweight championship from 1952 to 1956. If you’re a boxing fan like us, this is the place to check out.

Cheesy Tip: Rocky’s Pizza has an extensive list of pizzas named after iconic boxers, such as:

  • Prince Naseed Hamed — (Rocky’s sauce) Ground lamb, red onions, yellow onions, cilantro, feta cheese, hot honey drizzle.
  • Rocky Marciano — Three cheese blend pizza with your choice of any crust, source and any toppings.
  • Muhammad Ali — (Alfredo sauce) chicken breast strips, button mushrooms, yellow onions, ripe black olives and extra parmesan cheese.
  • George Forman — (Mild red sauce) spiced beef, bacon crumbles, yellow onions, fresh diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce optional.
  • Mike Tyson — (Rocky’s sauce) Meatball and cheese blend.

These pizzas are a knockout!

Cheesy Tip: While you’re enjoying your pizza, take a walk around the quaint streets of Mt. Laurel Square—it’s too beautiful not to!

19. Bottega Café

Bottega Café is a Birmingham must-try, and offers a fine dining and café option. At the café, you can try classic pies like the Margherita, but more unusual offerings include pizzas topped with crawfish, smoked salmon or asparagus (but not together, we should clarify!).

Cheesy Tip: This is a classic Birmingham dinner spot, but don’t sleep on the café side for lunch. They don’t take reservations, but the best spot is at the bar to watch the stylish clientele—and the pizza oven—do their thing.
