If you’ve driven in Uptown this week, you probably noticed trucks bringing literally tons of dirt into Protective Stadium. But how much dirt are we talking about?

According to the BJCC, more than 9,200 tons of dirt—or 18,400,000 pounds—have been brought into the venue to transform Protective Stadium’s field into a challenging dirt racecourse.

Here are some fun facts:

  • It takes over 20 hours for 25 trucks to bring in the 400 loads of dirt needed to fill Protective Stadium.
  • The dirt is sourced from a local site just outside of Birmingham.
  • The dirt is a mixture of Alabama red clay and small amounts of brown, sandy-er dirt.
