In a historic move, Cindy Mullins has been named the Executive Director of Birmingham Landmarks, Inc., the nonprofit organization that owns and operates both the Lyric and Alabama Theatre.

This marks the first time in the Alabama Theatre’s 98-year history that a woman has led these iconic venues.

First Woman to Lead Historic Venues

Cindy Mullins’ hard work has named her the Executive Director of Birmingham Landmarks, Inc., becoming the first woman to lead these theatres.

Mullins has a long history with the theatres, starting as Director of the Hill Event Center before managing the Lyric Theatre and the Alabama Theatre. Most recently, she served as Vice President of Birmingham Landmarks, booking over 500 events between 2017 and 2024.

Brant Beene, Board Chair of Birmingham Landmarks, praised Mullins, saying:

“She has earned the trust and respect of everyone at Birmingham Landmarks.”

The Lyric Theatre, the oldest in Birmingham, reopened in 2016 after being closed for over 40 years. It now hosts a variety of performances, including concerts, dance shows and community events.

The Alabama Theatre, known as “The Showplace of the South,” opened in 1927 and remains a cultural landmark, hosting over 150,000 visitors each year for concerts, movies and other events.

With Mullins at the top, the future looks bright for these iconic venues.
