UAB receives approval for $167M in new major construction projects

UAB has received approval from The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees for three major construction projects totaling $167 million.
At their February 7th meeting, the Trustees approved the construction of a new student service building, expansion of UAB Health System’s downtown emergency department and renovation of a research and imaging space.

UAB keeps growing
If you have driven down University Boulevard over the past year, you probably noticed lots of cranes, hard hats and construction on campus.
UAB has several major projects it is about to finish in 2025, including:
- Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building
- Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center
- Gorrie Hall, new School of Engineering Building
- McCallum Basic Health Sciences – full renovation
More building in UAB pipeline
At their first meeting of 2025, the Board of Trustees placed three projects in the pipeline.
They are:
- $84 million student services and administration building. The new building will house key administrative offices including the president, provost, finance and administration, development, Office of Marketing and Communications, and other student services.
- $70 million expansion of UAB Health System’s downtown Birmingham emergency department.
- $13 million upgrade of the Zeigler Research Building
