Jefferson County just got a boost in driving safety with the completion of a new 5-Leg Turbo Roundabout located in McCalla along Old Tuscaloosa Highway and the new Smucker’s facility entrance.
Read on for details on what puts the “turbo” in this roundabout project and why it’s a win for local drivers. Plus, get details on four new projects in the works.
About the 5-Leg Turbo Roundabout in McCalla
The project began in March 2023 with a primary goal of enhancing safety, efficiency, and traffic flow.
“Research consistently shows that roundabouts enhance safety, and in most cases, improve traffic flow compared to traditional signalized or stop-controlled intersections.”
Chris Nicholson, Director of Roads + Transportation, Jefferson County
Though the project was originally contracted for $11,133,759.68, it came in under budget at $10,836,169.53.
What’s a 5-Leg Turbo Roundabout?
I confess—I love roundabouts. They’re like a quick kiddie ride at the fair, adding some fun to a monotonous drive. But what makes a roundabout “turbo”?
You may think the difference between a roundabout and a turbo roundabout is a potāto potăto situation between a roundabout and a turbo roundabout, but there are some key differences between them.
While typical roundabouts allow drivers to change lanes within the roundabout to reach their desired exit, turbo roundabouts have dedicated line that direct traffic to specific lanes.
“The design for turbo roundabouts is particularly beneficial in high-traffic areas, especially where industrial and commuter traffic intersect. Jefferson Met Industrial Park in McCalla was an ideal candidate for this design.”
Chris Nicholson, Director of Roads + Transportation, Jefferson County
How is the new Turbo Roundabout in Jefferson County fairing? According to Chris, all blinkers point to great.
“Although the roundabout has only been open a few weeks, initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Verbal reports from drivers indicate smooth operations, and drone footage confirms traffic is flowing efficiently.”
Chris Nicholson, Director of Roads + Transportation, Jefferson County
