Attention parents and caregivers of 6th to 12th graders in the Greater Birmingham Area! If you’re looking for a way to inspire your kids, deepen their faith, and help them make meaningful friendships, we have the perfect opportunity.
Mark your calendars for Discovery Weekend happening February 21-23, at Asbury United Methodist Church in North Shelby County.
Read on for three reasons why this is a can’t-miss event and how to sign up.
1. Discovery Weekend at Asbury UMC will help your teen grow in their faith
I know what you’re thinking…it sounds like just another church event. Guess again! Discovery Weekend is way cooler.
During this three-day retreat, kids in middle school and high school will have the chance to grow spiritually while learning what it means to live out their faith daily through inspiring worship, impactful messages, and small group discussions.
Something your teen will especially enjoy is that local high schoolers will be taking the lead on many of the activities taking place. This peer-led approach is a great way to help students feel more engaged and empowered. It’s also a good opportunity for younger students to learn from older role models.
This year’s Discovery Weekend theme and theme passage is “WAVES,” inspired by Matthew 3:13-17. Through this passage detailing Jesus’ baptism, students will discover the Holy Spirit’s impact and how it still makes “waves” in our lives today.
2. Your teen will build meaningful friendships with fellow students in the Birmingham area
Middle and high school is a time when everyone wants to be liked and fit in with their peers. This can make it difficult to create real connections.
Luckily, this is an area where Discovery Weekend shines. It’s designed to foster deep connections between students so they can build friendships and a sense of belonging through team-building activities, small group time and more.
There will also be a meal-packing event with Rise Against Hunger—a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies.
3. Asbury UMC has exciting activities planned
Now for the not-so-serious part—the activities!
Students who attend Discovery Weekend can expect three full days of fun and laughter with all sorts of exciting activities.
Some things to expect, include:
- A bonfire + luau
- Crafts
- Indoor + outdoor sports games
- Talent show
- Video games
Sounds like a weekend teens will never forget!
