John Carroll Catholic High School breaks ground on new $2.7M Pat Sullivan Field

John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham officially began work on a $2.7 million construction project to renovate Pat Sullivan Field, named for one of the school’s most famous alumni, Heisman Trophy-winning Auburn quarterback Pat Sullivan.

The project was funded by the donations to the JCCHS Excellence in Athletics Foundation. John Carroll is the largest and oldest Catholic high school in the Diocese of Birmingham and has a history of athletic success in multiple sports.
The renovated stadium will include:
- A new turf field
- 6-lane track
- Shot put and high jump facilities
- Video scoreboard
The renovations are scheduled to be complete by August of 2025.
Pat Sullivan: A Birmingham sports legend
After a brilliant high school career at John Carroll, Sullivan broke school and NCAA records as the quarterback for the Auburn Tigers under head coach Shug Jordan, winning the 1971 Heisman Trophy.
After playing six season in the NFL, Sullivan went on to a long and successful coaching career, serving as an assistant at Auburn and UAB and a head coach at TCU and Samford.
Sullivan passed away in 2019 following a long battle with cancer. Sullivan was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and remains one of the state’s most beloved sports legends.
