Alabama’s last Macy’s did not make the closure list released by the company last week.

One of America’s oldest and most recognizable department store chains announced plans to close 66 of its locations nationwide in a January 9th news release. The store at the Galleria, which is the one remaining Macy’s in the state, did not appear on the list.

Macy’s at the Galleria on the market

As reported by Bham Now, in August 2024 the Macy’s property at the Galleria was locally placed on the market for sale or lease by SRS Real Estate Properties.

Nationally, Macy’s is implementing its Bold New Chapter strategy, a plan designed to return the venerable department store back to profitability by closing approximately 150 stores over a three-year period, while investing in 350 locations.

Is the Macy’s within the state of Alabama’s largest mall in Hoover safe from the chopping block?

Unfortunately, as of January 13, 2025, the Macy’s Galleria location listing remains on SRS Real Estate website.

In a statement by the company last year they are looking at their options.

“There is a current evaluation underway comparing the potential real estate value and the future sales growth profitability potential. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at this time. If at some point we proceed with closing this location, the soonest this will happen will be in 2025.”

For fans of Macy’s in Alabama, it looks like there is at least a temporary stay on its closure.
