Growing up in Hueytown, Jennifer Gerardo’s parents made it a priority to teach her the value of a dollar. Now, as a mother of two, she’s committed to passing those same lessons on to her children.

Read on to learn more about her journey with Kids First, the unique savings account that’s helping her kids achieve their financial goals, save money and even earn money for good grades.

According to Jennifer, opening Kids First accounts for her children was an important tool in teaching them about the value of money and the benefits of saving.

At eight years apart, Travis (14) and Averie (6) have very different financial goals.

“Travis’s main goal is to save money for his truck. He likes to spend his money on parts for his truck, but he’s also generous with his little sister and buys her snacks and toys too.”

Averie, on the other hand, has some more ambitious goals.

“She says she’s saving money for a big mansion and lots of farm animals!”

Kids First teaches the value of a dollar

Whether your children are teens or just starting school, Kids First gives them the opportunity to learn financial responsibility and how bank accounts work.

They can can make deposits and withdrawals and save through their accounts managed by parents, grandparents or other guardians.

Plus, kids can even earn money through the Honors Dollars program.

Bring your child’s latest report card with all A’s and B’s to any of the 20+ AmFirst branches in Alabama, and AmFirst will deposit $10 into their account.

Financial literacy runs in the family

Since opening her Kids First accounts in 2015, Jennifer has recommended them to her sister, who has opened accounts for her own children as well.

“I always recommend the Kids First program to other parents.

If they do well in school, AmFirst rewards them with $10 per report card. It’s so important to teach financial responsibilities at a young age. If children can learn early on, they have a better chance at being financially stable and successful as an adult.”
