A new restaurant and bar is coming soon to Vestavia! Bham Now met with Chefs Jessica Armstrong and James Bennett to learn more about Miss Astrid’s Tavern, an exciting new addition to Cahaba Heights.

Miss Astrid’s Tavern is a dream ten years in the making

A veteran of the local culinary scene with years of experience at Greystone, Vestavia and Anniston Country Clubs, Chef Jessica Armstrong has had her eyes on the former Fig Tree Café space for nearly a decade.

After The Fig closed earlier this year, Chef Armstrong began gathering partners to help bring her dream to life. One of those partners is Chef James Bennett, who worked alongside local chef Haller McGee, helped open The Fennec and worked at the Birmingham Country Club.

“With our shared background in the country club environment, Chef Bennett and I want to give our guests the country club experience—without having to pay the dues.

We plan to have charcutuerie classes, wine dinners, beer and bourbon dinners and more.”

Chefs Armstrong and Bennett are working with Denise Boley (owner of the neighboring Resultz Day Spa) and her business partner, Richard Edge.

In fact, the name Miss Astrid’s Tavern pays homage to Richard’s mother, Astrid Smyer.

“Miss Astrid was one of my favorite clients. She was nurturing and no-nonsense—and who could forget her beautiful British accent.

After she passed away in 2021, we wanted to do something to honor her and who she was.”

When Denise suggested naming their beer garden/tavern after Miss Astrid, Richard was all for it.

Dinner will be all Chef Bennett.”

One highlight of the dinner menu for Miss Astrid’s Tavern is a crispy skin-on halibut with Algerian harissa sauce, crispy black lentils, cardamom carrots, creme fresh and pickled bits.

Inside, Miss Astrid’s Tavern will include a bar with a full drinks menu designed by a talented local mixologist.

In addition to beer and wine, Miss Astrid’s Tavern will offer specialty cocktails designed to pair with each dish and garnished with herbs from its onsite garden. The Miss Astrid’s Tavern teams plans to add a beer garden in the back in the near future.
