Last week news about the world-renowned orthopedic clinic redeveloping a portion of the vacant Brookwood Village shopping center was reported by Bham Now.

During the public hearing, four local residents commented on the project, asking for more information and offering additional suggestions and information about other potential uses of the property, especially retail.

Homewood resident Jeremy Love encouraged Andrews to look into alternatives to the Brookwood site. He also asked the city to attract more retail to the area.

Ashley Condon, who works in the hotel and hospitality community was concerned Homewood might miss a big economic development opportunity.

“I often look at Birmingham and feel like we’re missing the mark when it comes to driving economic development and growth into our community. I feel like this is a great opportunity.”

In response to the concerns expressed at the meeting, Paul Darden with Fairway Investments, the property’s owner, assured the Commission that additional plans are in the works for the Brookwood Village site.

“We see this (Andrews Sports Medicine proposal) as an exciting opportunity to kickstart one of the greatest opportunities that exist in our state — to reimagine what the future of Brookwood can be.”

According to Jennifer Andress, Chair of the Homewood City Council’s Planning and Development Committee, the Andrews proposal will now be on the City Council referral agenda on November 18th.

On November 25th the project will be heard by the Planning and Development Committee and then sent back out to the Council for a public hearing in December.

During the November 5th meeting representatives for Andrews told the Planning Commission they hope to break ground on the new facility during the first quarter of 2025.
